Recent advances in cell death research provide insight that cellular signaling can be spatially restricted. The enormous size of neurons and the length of axons generates particular challenges for the subcellular regulation of mitochondrial apoptosis processes. This project will investigate how co-transportation of PINK1 mRNA in a synaptojanin 2-binding protein-dependent manner on axonal mitochondria contributes to mitochondrial resilience, mitophagy of damaged mitochondria, caspase activation and subcellular neurite death decisions.
