Jaguar, drone, human being: Indigenous vigilance in Amazonia (A10*)
Subject Area
Social and Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology
Term
since 2023
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 394775490
The environmental changes and destruction in the Amazon rainforest have been documented and systematised for several years by groups of indigenous women and men using technical equipment (e.g. drones) provided by external actors. However, according to the traditional indigenous understanding of vigilance, non-human beings, embodied for example by jaguars, also watch over the forest. The project investigates the transformation of concepts and practices of vigilance caused by the introduction of new technologies, as well as the implications for the now-expanded assemblage of actors due to the involvement of international cooperation.
