In dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP), paramagnetic metal ions such as Gd(III) can act as polarizing agents, relying on the transfer of spin-polarization from the paramagnetic metal ion to the surrounding nuclei. However, in all systems investigated so far, the relatively slow electron spin relaxation of these metal ions causes a significant broadening of the surrounding nuclei, making them invisible to NMR detection. The ability to induce ultrafast spin-dynamics in a polarizing agent could circumvent this problem. To overcome this problem, we tailor mixed-metal complexes with a photo-switchable, fast-relaxing 3d paramagnetic center that is coupled to the DNP-active ion.
