We would like to obtain a thorough understanding of supersymmetry breakdown in string theory. Known mechanisms like the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism or the dynamical breakdown through gaugino condensates should be generalized to the framework of M-theory and F-theory in the light of recently discovered duality symmetries. This would allow us to obtain a comprehensive formulation of the effective action of hidden sector supergravity models that could be relevant as a generalization of the standard SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) model of elementary particle physics.
