Project Details
Role of phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase (PHGPx) in sperm maturation
Applicant
Professor Dr. Leopold Flohé
Subject Area
Biochemistry
Term
from 2000 to 2007
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5238476
The relationship between PHGPx content of sperm and male fertility is to be investigated in humans and experimental animals. The process leading to a transformation of the soluble peroxidase PHGPx in spermatids to an enzymatically inactive structural protein in mature spermatozoa is to be investigated by analytical chemistry and molecular biology techniques. Of particular interest are/i) the catalysts and/or co-reactants contributing to the transformation of PHGPx,ii) the source and nature of the oxidants required, and/iii) the triggering mechanisms underlying this differentiation process.
