V-Si-B alloy are in focus of materials development since a few years. Especially the good specific mechanical properties demonstrate their ability as an attractive new type of high temperature material besides Ni- and Mo-based alloys. Compared to Mo-Si-B alloys, the V-based counterpart show some astonishing similarities in their microstructural formation. Both alloy systems form a ternary eutectic in the metal-rich region of the phase diagram (e.g. for vanadium) consisting of a metal solid solution phase, VSS, and the two intermetallic phases V3Si and V5SiB2. This eutectic microstructure can be controlled and grown via directional solidification which will lead to desired orientation dependent mechanical properties. Thus, depending on mechanical loads the microstructure could be designed and adjusted for certain applications, comparable to Ni-based superalloys. The present application analysis the microstructure formation and the resulting orientation dependent mechanical properties (strength and creep) during the directional solidification od novel eutectic V-Si-B alloys. Zone melting will be performed ex-situ. However, the in-situ synchrotron experiments of major interest because only then it will be possible to investigate and analyze the liquid-solid transformation directly during zone melting.
