Momentum Microscope for time resolved Photoelectronpectroscopy

Subject Area Condensed Matter Physics
Term Funded in 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 519025101

With the requested instrument the research groups "Ultrafast Dynamics" (Bauer group) and "Solid State Research with Synchrotron Radiation" (Rossnagel group) aim for a state-of-the-art update of the exsisting infrastructure for time- and angle-resolved photoemission. The following features distinguish the requested impulse microscope from the photoelectron spectrometers, presently available in the groups: A parallel and therefore efficient three-dimensional detection of the electronic band structure of solids in energy-momentum space becomes possible. Additionally, the design of the instrument allows for the selection of a real-space detection region in the few micrometer range. Finally, the instrument can be operated in a real-space microscopy mode, so that complementary information on lateral variations in the probed area can be collected at a spatial resolution in the 100 nm range. These peculiarities allow to apply novel experimental approaches particularly in the study of ultrafast processes in topical two-dimensional materials, which since a few years has become a research focus of the two groups. Even more, they enable the groups the study of sample systems, which were not accessible with the so far available detection systems. With the requested instrument, the two research groups specifically plan studies of the following, partly already funded subjects: - Electronic structure dynamics in transition-metal dichalcogenides: - Quasi-particle couplings in topological materials and two-dimensional hetero-structures; - PHz strong-field processes in graphene and semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides; - Time-resolved orbital tomography and low-energy photoelectron diffraction of adsorbate-surface systems; - Interface dynamics in real devices.
