Real-time implementations of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) techniques such as neurofeedback or brain-computer interfaces have great potential for basic neuroscience research and clinical applications. With this project, we aim to address fundamental methodological limitations that so far significantly limit the reach of fNIRS real-time applications. Of particular concern is evaluating the performance of real-time fNIRS data cleaning procedures and conclusions for reliable, standardised real-time processing. Our research results will help advance real-time fNIRS as a tool for basic neuroscience research and clinical applications.
