Computer simulations on HPC systems play a vital role for understanding complex geoprocesses. Moreover the linking of simulations and observations is key to understand such processes. The simultaneous growth of data collection and advanced modelling capabilities, i.e. the interaction of data explosion and HPC simulations, drives geoscientific modeling today with a focus on the quantitative combination of models and observations. The Chair of Geophysics at LMU Munich is in an excellent position to exploit this development. It maintains a powerful Linux computing cluster system on the one hand, and operates the Geophysical Observatory in Fuerstenfeldbruck and the Bavarian earthquake service on other hand. The storage and rapid provision of data collected at our facilities for model driven evaluation processes require a mass storage infrastructure with high availability, capacity and access speed. This applies both to local use by on site researchers, as well as to the provision of data for world-wide access. For this reason the long-term maintenance of an efficient IT infrastructure at the Chair of Geophysics LMU Munich, which is primarily focused on geoscientific modelling, is of immense importance. This proposal thus aims to refresh the existing mass storage infrastructure from 2013.
