Genetic and functional diversity of Lotus SymRK homologous receptor kinases in root endosymbiosis (B07)

Cell developmental programs in Arbuscular Mycorrhiza (AM) and Root Nodule Symbiosis (RNS) leading to the intracellular accommodation of symbionts in the root epidermis depend on the membrane-bound Symbiosis Receptor Kinase (SymRK). We propose that SymRK Homologous Receptor Kinases (SHRKs) might be involved in controlling symbiotic host cell remodeling to accommodate microbes in the cortex. Based on preliminary studies in Lotus japonicus, knockout of individual SHRKs potentially leads to at least three different phenotypes in AM or RNS. This suggests functionally different subcategories within this receptor family. In this project, we aim to investigate the molecular details responsible for this functional differentiation. We envision that the functional studies of SHRKs will uncover new signalling nodes for symbiotic accommodation in the root.
