Optically Addressable Spins of Molecular Rare-Earth Ions for Quantum Information Processing (C02)

Subject Area Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Inorganic Molecular Chemistry - Synthesis and Characterisation
Physical Chemistry of Molecules, Liquids and Interfaces, Biophysical Chemistry
Term since 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 471424360

The aim of the project is to investigate and establish molecular lanthanide (Ln) or rare-earth ions (REIs) for quantum information processing (QIP) and networking applications. REI, so far mostly studied in solid state crystals, provide coherent nuclear spin states with in which quantum states can be stored, and narrow 4f-4f optical transitions that can be used for direct optical readout and control of the spin states. This makes them prime candidates to realize long-lived quantum memories and qubits with the capability to perform quantum logic gates. We will therefore realize molecular rare-earth complexes with tailored optical and spin properties and investigate optical spin readout towards the goal of single-ion detection and qubit control by coupling ions to optical microcavities.
