This project is based on the hypothesis that the trade-off between transcription and RNA degradation is a key requirement for the rapid growth of bacterial cells and their ability to adapt to changing conditions. We will study the central role of RNase Y and the contributions of other players in RNA degradation and transcription as well as their roles in the interdependence of these processes by genetic, biochemical and physiological analyses. Moreover, we will analyze structural changes in the RNA polymerase that allow the adaptation to growth in the absence of the major process of bulk mRNA degradation.
