Method for optimizing the relationships between additive manufacturing and machining

Subject Area Metal-Cutting and Abrasive Manufacturing Engineering
Term since 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 513747002

The objective of the project is the development of a methodology based on the approach of “technical inheritance”, which analyzes the interdependency between additive manufacturing and machining. The gained knowledge from manufacturing is used in the product development process of the subsequent product generation. More specifically is the knowledge is used to holistically optimize the combination of additive primary forming and machining. The goal is to explore the potential in terms of the efficiency and manufacturability of workpieces. For example, one of the main assumptions is that additional stiffening structures make the machining of components, which are prone to vibrations (e.g. thin-walled or long cantilever), feasible in the first place. In order to further investigate the feedback of information between manufacturing and product development a number of workpiece generations will be manufactured. The final component geometry is not changed by the proposed procedure, as the stiffening structures are removed again during machining. The design freedom of additive manufacturing is thus exploited, the additional stiffening structures however, do increase the effort necessary in machining for their removal. For this reason, a conflict of objectives between a product that is as stiff as possible and a minimum machining time in the cutting process must be resolved through the use of an evaluation function. In addition, a data and information feedback for the improvement and adaptation of components in product development is to be established for the process combination additive/ machining. With the help of several component generations, the feedback and application of acquired information and knowledge according to technical inheritance will be demonstrated and transferred into a partially automated adaptation of the stiffening structures.
