Generation and transmission of forces and stresses are essential in many cellular processes and cells are structurally complex and inhomogeneous. This project aims at measuring locally resolved internal stress fields in model networks using self-assembled FRET force sensors based on DNA. The experimental endeavor is complemented with numerical modeling of increasingly complex and heterogeneous rigid, semiflexible and flexible polymer assemblies, relying on novel and highly efficient methods for physically simulating viscoelastic materials made of slender filaments.
