Cardiac electrophysiology is frequently described by means of the parabolic-elliptic bidomain model, or the computationally cheaper, yet less accurate, parabolic monodomain model. We consider the adaptive spatial coupling of both models in numerical simulations in order to formulate a description that accurately covers relevant bidomain effects while being computationally economical in regions where a monodomain description is sufficient. Coupling conditions and model selection criteria will be devised, tested and implemented in a parallel, mesh-adaptive simulation framework. Flexible implementation will be sought for the sake of easy further model refinement. This project is part of the DFG research unit "Structure-Preserving Numerical Methods for Bulk- and Interface-Coupling of Heterogeneous Models (SNuBIC)".
