GSC 266: Materials Science in Mainz
Final Report Abstract
The Graduate School of Excellence “Materials Science in Mainz” (MAINZ) has offered over the past 12 years innovative scientific, technical and complementary PhD training combined with excellent research in materials science. MAINZ has bridged previously disjoint fields of research, ranging from simple model systems and correlated materials to functional polymers, hybrid structures and bio-related materials. This has allowed MAINZ members to develop a common language, to foster interdisciplinary transfer of knowledge, and to gain insight into systems traditionally seen as separate. MAINZ has gained a strong international reputation in materials science, with already more than 220 PhD students having graduated from MAINZ. Our students have been supervised by selected excellent scientists from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), the University of Kaiserslautern (TUKL) and the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P). The MAINZ main training objective is to provide a comprehensive but flexible graduate program that is tailored to the individual needs of our PhD students. Our training concept combined Training through Research with Training for Life offering comprehensive education for future professionals in academia, industry, and beyond. MAINZ has provided scientific and technical training in selected areas of advanced Synthesis and Characterization, Theory and Simulations as well as Processing, Method Development. By a sophisticated mentoring program our students have been prepared for a broad range of future careers. The training program has been supported by our strong links to industrial partners and comprised a range of judiciously selected transferable skills courses. By exposing its members to diverse fields of materials science and bringing together seemingly disjunct ideas and concepts, MAINZ has encouraged creativity and has inspired novel associations between its research areas as well as collaborations between its partners. This has resulted in intensified collaborations and sustained excellent research and comprehensive training necessary to meet key societal challenges ahead.
