Project B11 analyzes the influence of protectionism on the coverage and generosity of social policy in Argentina and the United States from the globalization phase at the end of the 19th century to present day in a historical comparative perspective. The starting point is the observation that protectionism and social policy operate in different ways as functional equivalents for protecting certain groups from the consequences of global economic integration. The policies covered are examined in terms of: (1) global economic frameworks, (2) multilateral treaties and international organizations, and (3) the transnational transfer of ideas.
