Estimation of surface protection via microbial networks in salt and soil crusts in the Atacama Desert (C09)

Besides the surface stabilization of Atacama Surface crusts and the adaptation to extreme environments, microorganisms may provide the foundation of the food chain and habitats for other organisms including plants. We are aiming at understanding the role of surface sediments and biocrusts and their water holding capacity in the hydrological cycle. How does microbial colonization change in relation to the substrate and surface sediment properties? Which requirements are necessary for active microbial networks to enhance/maintain surface crust stabilization? How did microbial communities adapt to the changing paleo-ecological conditions during the desiccation of the former lake Salar Grande?
