The excellent Graduate School for advanced Manufacturing Engineering (GSaME) will be jointly created by 27 principal investigators from 17 institutes belonging to four faculties of the University of Stuttgart. The GSaME will have self-administration with its own terms and conditions, an autonomous management, its own curricular concept including selection procedures and regulation for doctoral degree. Successful doctoral candidates will receive the degree of Dr.-Ing. or Dr. rer. pol. The promising advanced Manufacturing Engineering (aME) paradigm for the "next generation factories" is supported by a collection of emerging technologies according the following interdisciplinary research fields (clusters): Stuttgart Enterprise Model as the base, digital and virtual engineering, ICT for manufacturing, materials and process engineering, networking in manufacturing, intelligent production systems and knowledge-based management. "Sustainability and manufacturing" was defined as the seventh cluster and will be equipped with a junior professorship.
The mission of the graduate school is to advance the scientific foundation of manufacturing engineering by autonomous scientific work and through interdisciplinary qualifying the elite of managers, engineers and scientists for the global challenges of the next generation factories. The GSaME will implement the very successful concept of the dual education system for vocational training established in Germany, aiming at a "dual scientific education system", which will focus on a constant change between theoretical and practical phases based on independent scientific work.
In close cooperation with national and international institutions, the graduate school will promote an innovative model of doctoral research training, based on the integration and harmonisation of five core elements:
(1) Theoretical lectures and seminars,
(2) the Learning Factory for aME, as an innovative training, research and test environment for performing practical research with physical and digital tools,
(3) dissertation projects performed in an excellent and collaborative supervision and mentoring environment, with a high value added by the
(4) industry best-practice internships and
(5) international orientation. The objective of the initial funding period is to make a substantial step towards a comprehensive "system for advanced Manufacturing Engineering" through interdisciplinary scientific research. The GSaME is a central institution of the University of Stuttgart.
