Developing Airborne Laser Doppler Vibrometry for Enhanced Dynamic Characterization for Large Engineering Structures

Subject Area Measurement Systems
Term since 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 496079937

Laser-Doppler vibrometry (LDV) is a powerful technique for measuring large building structures but measuring from the ground results in oblique angles of incidence for measurement points at height and in the inability to detect backs in relation to the measurement sensor position. In addition, disturbances due to density fluctuations in the atmosphere lead to increased noise when measuring over longer distances. This project is founded on vibration-based health monitoring by means of LDV and freely movables scanning mirrors attached to drones. Our joint goal is to explore means in order to (A) make possible an airborne LDV system comprising a ground LDV and an airborne optical unit attached to a drone for remote measuring structural dynamical response and(B) exploring enhanced ambient vibration testing using the airborne LDV for a large historical structure for improved damage assessment.
