Project Details
Detection and attribution of anthropogenic drivers in extreme events (D04)
Subject Area
Atmospheric Science
Term
since 2022
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 450058266
The project investigates the influence of regional changes in land and water use on the emergence and development of extremes in the terrestrial and atmospheric energy and water budget, in particular during heat waves and droughts. To this end, we are developing a detection and attribution study that integrates physical process understanding and spatiotemporal statistical modeling to describe the relevant processes, thus answering the questions: (1) How well can we detect changes in extreme events in the water and energy budget during heat waves and droughts? (2) What is the role of changes in land and water use, and how large is their influence on the characteristics of extreme events?
