Final Report Abstract

The aim of this project was lo overcome a severe shortcoming of standard multi-phase flow and transport models: despite the role of fluid-fluid interfaces for two-phase flow, hysteresis, and kinetic interphase mass transfer, this parameler is not accounted for. Therefore, a thermodynamically-based model of flow and transport in porous media was taken as a starting point. Within the research period in Utrecht • a balance equation for specific interfacial area was derived, a constitutive relationship between specific interfacial area, capillary presssure, and saturation was obtained from a pore-network model, and a source term of specific interfacial area was found by physical reasoning. All that was implemented in a numerical simulator (2pia model). • il could be shown that the 2pia model is able to account for capillary hysteresis without need for hysteretic capillary pressure-saturation curves. • parameters for the new model could be obtained from micro-model experimenis. • a semi-analytical solution was developed for a specific model setup which can be used as reference solution. • kinetic interphase mass transfer was modeled based on the inierfacial area model (2p2cia model). • a number of cooperations was established and will be pursued in the future.
