Exploring the inner envelope K+ nexus to dissect the significance of the plastid ion ho-meostasis for acclimation (B09)

Subject Area Plant Physiology
Term since 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 270050988

The plant’s acclimation potential relies in part on metal ion export and import into the chloroplast. Our work will focus on the function of ion transport proteins in the inner envelope (IE) from the KEA and PEC family. We will resolve the structure of the IE KEA K+/H+ exchanger using Arabidopsis and then study KEA’s role in the light response of Chlamydomonas where we found that KEA-deficient strains cannot acclimate to high light. In the second part, we will employ Arabidopsis loss- and gain-of-function mutants to dissect the link between PEC function and the abiotic stress-induced stromal Ca2+ response. Central to this aim is our discovery that PEC level and stromal Ca2+ signals are controlled by jasmonic acid.
