The Max Planck Society has been consistently advocating the implementation of Open Access for many years. The Max Planck Digital Library is the operational unit charged with the concrete organization and implementation of appropriate measures. The central starting points are the equal, if not preferential, treatment of open access offerings compared to models behind the paywall, as well as efforts to organize all associated billing processes as centrally and uniformly as possible without burdening authors with effort and costs. In addition to "direct billing" contracts with purely open access publishers, the concept of "transformative contracts" has proven to be a powerful instrument in recent years, which will be further expanded. The funds from the present proposal are to be used to push ahead even more consistently and rapidly with the conversions to date, with the aim that around 90% of all MPG corresponding author publications can then be centrally processed and billed under a free license.
