As one of the initial signatories of the 2003 Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities, the Helmholtz Association promotes and supports the implementation of Open Access. With the publication of the Helmholtz Open Access Guideline in 2016 (updated 2022 within in the Helmholtz Open Science Policy) at the latest, all institutions of the Helmholtz Association have been given guidance on how to meet the requirements to support Open Access properly. With the application for the second phase of the DFG funding programme "Open Access Publication Funding", the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research GmbH - UFZ aims to adapt and optimize established work processes relating to Open Access. This includes the possible (partially) automated import of publications into the institutional repository, the evaluation of the UFZ's central publication fund after the expansion of 2022 and even more comprehensive cost monitoring to meet the requirements of the information budget. With the aim of creating complete cost transparency, well-founded evaluations can provide valuable support for strategic decisions. All these measures are also adopted to accomplish the aim of 100% open access quota for publications starting with the publication year 2025, formulated in the Helmholtz Association's Open Access Policy.
