Quantum electrodynamics (QED) is a highly demanding subfield of theoretical physics: one faces both field theoretical as well as numerical difficulties and challenges. Typically, in order to advance theory from the current level of understanding and in order to organize a functioning work group in this domain, it is necessary to have postdoctoral support for the activities, because the demanding calculations depend on previously acquired knowledge either in field theory or in numerical studies, or preferably in both. Here, within a Heisenberg Fellow Junior Research Group located in Heidelberg, a proposal is offered which includes a support of the group activities by two postdoctoral scientists, to solve various topical problems of an increased level of difficulty, in both bound-state calculations as well as in other, application-oriented approaches that include the interaction of atoms with conducting surfaces.
