X-ray diffractometer

Subject Area Condensed Matter Physics
Term Funded in 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 470034807

At the Chair of Experimental Physics IV, the synthesis of solids and the deposition of layers or complex layer systems is an essential part of the scientific work. The spectrum of material systems includes metals, semiconductors, insulators such as diamond and organic layers. After sample preparation, structural analysis is typically carried out using X-ray diffraction. While the structure itself, up to wafer-sized single crystals, is often the focus of work in diamond activities, X-ray diffraction in other projects provides information about phase composition and structure, which is of central importance for the interpretation of the subsequent measurements (including magnetic, thermoelectric properties). Depending on the different systems and questions, standard theta-2-theta measurements, rocking curves, azimuthal scans, pole figures, residual stress measurements and high-resolution measurements are required. X-ray structure analysis is therefore one of the most important methods at the chair. In order to maintain the successful processing of various third-party funded projects and the acquisition of new projects, a modern x-ray diffractometer is urgently required.
