In our project, we will study the spin-resolved transient band-structure and population dynamics during laser-induced demagnetization processes. An understanding of ultrafast magnetic processes from a band-structure point of view is indispensable to solve some of the current key-problems in ultrafast magnetism, in particular with respect to seemingly contradictory experimental results. Important fundamental questions that will be addressed are the description of finite temperature itinerant electron ferromagnetism, and in particular the description in non-equilibrium during and after an ultrafast optical excitation. In order to carry out the project, we will use a novel time- and spin-resolved photoemission experiment (spin-resolved momentum microscopy), and we apply for funding for a PhD student and the necessary equipment to prepare the needed ferromagnetic thin film sample systems.
