Collagen-binding integrin receptors are instrumental in maintaining the structural integrity of tissues rich in collagen, e.g. the dermis of the skin. Three of these receptors, integrins α1β1, α2β1 and α11β1, are expressed at varying levels by fibroblasts and endothelial cells in the dermis, while epidermal keratinocytes only express α2β1. Mice deficient for either one or two receptors will be subjected to conditions challenging the functions mediated by the integrins. Together with complementary in vitro functional assays using mutant fibroblasts and endothelial cells, this work will contribute to identifying unique and overlapping receptor functions in skin.
