This project investigates the role of advective and physical small-scale processes for stratosphere-troposphere exchange in the extratropics in the framework of baroclinic life cycles. Starting from dry idealised simulations with the ICON model, Lagrangian and Eulerian diagnostics will be developed and applied to analyse the mass flux across the tropopause as well as the formation of the extratropical transition layer. The diagnostics will then be applied to idealised life cycle simulations including non-conservative processes as well as life cycles in ERA5 reanalysis data for episodes for which high resolution airborne observations are available.
