In A05 we propose to investigate the composition and formation mechanisms of secondary organic aerosol in the upper troposphere through both laboratory and field studies. We aim at identifying the relevant precursor gases through a top-down approach, in which we perform molecular-resolved, database-assisted analysis of the oxidation products that stem from volatile organic compounds. A novel airborne high-volume filter sampling setup shall be employed to obtain ambient samples for detailed analysis using liquid chromatography, high-resolution mass spectrometry and subsequent non-target analysis. This approach has the potential to distinguish anthropogenic from biogenic organic aerosol, and hence identify how anthropogenic emissions alter aerosol composition in the upper troposphere.
