Migration and Welfare States in the USA: Global and National Dynamics in Bureaucratic Human Differentiation (B06)
Subject Area
European and American Literary and Cultural Studies
Term
since 2021
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 442261292
The project explores the nexus between the generation of categories of human differentiation and the contested dynamics of modern state-building. It suggests that nation-states inscribe and operationalize central categories of human differentiation, such as ethnicity, race, gender and class, in the context of transnational challenges. The project focuses on U.S. immigration and social policy between the World Wars as a case study. It shows how processes of differentiation, nation-building and globalization are constitutive of each other.
