The research interests of the Department of Computer Science and Microsystems Engineering require the use of high spatial resolution fluorescence microscopy to characterize 3-dimensional biological and biomimetic preparations. The various projects will require an upright confocal microscope that will allow, for example, live cell measurements in organoids, in 3-dimensional muscle neuron co-cultures, dendritic knobs, and in organotypic slice cultures. In addition, the microscope applied for here will be required for the analysis and characterization of cell viability on 3-dimensional sensing surfaces as well as for the studies of fluorescent nanoparticles in 3-dimensional biological preparations. Due to the various projects and the application of fluorescence-coupled proteins as well as fluorescent nanoparticles, high flexibility in both excitation and emission is of great importance. Simultaneous as well as sequential multiple fluorescence recordings or ratiometric measurements of, among others, spectrally overlapping fluorophores are applied in these studies. For these multiple fluorescence recordings, a highly sensitive low-noise detector in a wavelength range of 410 nm - 850 nm, which allows the use of new dyes in the near infrared range, is required.
