Given the technologies developed in this CRC, it will nevertheless be impossible to completely banish the need for implant removals in the future, both due to likely technological advances and irreversible implant complications. Subproject B08 therefore addresses gentle explantation of implants. For this purpose, chemically modified surface coatings are to be developed, which become soft in response to an external stimulus (e.g., heat induced in superparamagnetic nanoparticles by alternating magnetic fields or light) and thus facilitate implant removal. Due to the coating, implant removal can be carried out very gently in soft tissue as well as in hard tissue.
