The aim of subproject A04 is to establish a fundamental understanding of damage mechanisms of modular implants based on their surface and subsurface properties and the connection design in order to effect new damage tolerant implant modifications based on mechanical engineering principles. Therefore, new approaches in the manufacturing process (regarding modification of junction surfaces) as well as in joining technology (bonding of modular components) will be pursued. Failure of modular total hip endoprostheses will be prevented by tailoring the design and surface/subsurface properties of the modular joint to the specific loading situation and the possibility of an early detection of micro-motions.
