In the project, two central resources for medieval research, the database Medieval Personal Names (about 390,000 records, mainly from the 8th to 13th centuries) and the database Nomen et Gens (about 70,000 records on persons and their names, from the 4th to the early 9th century), will be merged, technically brought up to date and expanded into a sustainable information resource for scholars. Together, the two databases form the world's largest repertory of early and high medieval personal names. The close cooperation of technology and humanities in the project leads to a comfortably usable humanities infrastructure that is optimised for research questions. The database opens up the possibility for future projects to automatically lemmatise personal names (e.g. for the creation of personal indexes for editions or for the annotation of electronic texts). It will be further enriched by data from the cooperation projects and will form a dynamically growing reservoir for research into the Middle Ages. Standardisation (including GND matching) and interfaces will make the new database compatible with other digital information infrastructures in the historical sciences.
