For many areas of biology and biochemistry, high-resolution mass spectrometry has become an invaluable tool to examine the composition of cells and tissues. In this proposal, we apply for a high-resolution liquid-chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) system, which will be integrated into the Mass Spectrometry Core Facility of the University of Leipzig's Faculty of Life Sciences. While this core facility runs instruments specialised in the analysis of proteins and peptides, the requested LC-MS system will allow the discovery and quantification of metabolites in complex cellular extracts. The new instrument is required by several research groups for a number of projects, including the analysis of secondary metabolites from microalgae, the investigation of the role of chemodiversity role in land plant-herbivore interactions, or the reliable detection of trace amounts of analytes in complex mixtures (e.g. herbicides in waste water). In addition, the requested instrument requires an extended mass range (m/z 50 to 6000) in order to characterise large intact proteins with a molecular weight of up to 150 kDa. The new LC-MS system will accelerate existing research projects at the University of Leipzig's Faculty of Life Sciences and facilitate the establishment of new collaborations and research consortia.
