The mass spectrometry (MS) is a fundamental analytical tool for the characterization of new compounds, providing the molecular weight, elemental constitution and hints regarding the molecular structure. Currently the MS service department which offers analytical service for many research groups of the Faculty of Chemistry, possesses only two high resolution mass spectrometers. Both instruments are older than 13 years and there is no further support and service from the suppliers, making the maintenance very difficult. Thus, the purchase of a new high resolution mass spectrometer (equipped with an ESI and APCI source) is essential for state of the art mass spectrometric characterization of a variety of compounds (organic synthesis products, liquid crystals, peptido RNA, (bio)polymers, organometallic complexes and elemental organic compounds). Furthermore, the upgrading by a Liquid Insertion Field Desorption Ionization (LIFDI) source enables the mass spectrometric investigation of oxidation- and moisture-sensitive compounds. As many of such compounds are also paramagnetic, NMR spectroscopy as an analytical method is impeded or even failed. The current application is therefore fundamental for the CRC 1333 "Molecular Heterogeneous Catalysis in Confined Geometries" and the SPP 2102 "Light-Controlled Reactivity of Metal Complexes".
