OLA-HD Service – A generic Service for the long-term Archiving of Historic Prints

Subject Area Data Management, Data-Intensive Systems, Computer Science Methods in Business Informatics
Term since 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 460652320

The primary goal of this project is the development of a productive service for the long-term archiving of historical prints in the context of OCR-D. This service, called OLA-HD Service, builds on a prototype of the OLA-HD project from the previous, second OCR-D funding phase and realizes a productive long-term archive that can be integrated into OCR-D workflows. The requirements for the OLA-HD Service were determined during a pilot phase based on the needs of individual institutions involved in OCR-D. Based on this, the functional scope of the OLA-HD Service will be specified, with a special focus on the generic use of the resulting service. This enables the direct integration of the service into the workflows of the OCR-D framework and its use in as many other digitization projects as possible.Based on the collected requirements, the project implements goals that reflect the needs of the community and enable the productive use of the service. These include optimal usability, the extension and optimization of the search and filter function of the OLA-HD prototype, storage options for intermediate results of OCR workflows, a fully comprehensive API for programmatic access to the archive (e.g. for presentation systems), and easy integration into OCR processing. In addition, the technical service is complemented by frameworks and best practices that allow operators of an OCR-D long-term archive to implement the necessary organizational measures. These include a generic data protection concept and the documentation required for certification according to CoreTrustSeal. The project will be work closely together with the OCR-D coordination committee and the other projects of the third funding phase and will implement the corresponding requirements and specifications, which will be defined for the integration into community workflows and the OCR-D framework.
