Due to the ever-increasing ratio of simulation domain size and the relatively small size—compared to that—of phenomena that are of interest to the domain scientists, Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) has become a dominant data representation for scientific simulation. The project VTV-AMR will specifically focus on the efficient visualization of large-scale, time-varying, cell-centered AMR data sets. Cell-centered AMR mandates the adoption of auxiliary data structures for spatial search in order to accomplish interactive frame rates with smooth and crack-free interpolation across level boundaries. The project will explore strategies to keep the visualization interactive even for time-varying data sets, where those data structures need to be adapted or completely rebuilt for each time step.
