Final Report Abstract

Mit der Inbetriebnahme des Large Hadron Collider (LHC) am europäischen Forschungszentrum CERN in Genf hat die Teilchenphysik eine neue Ära beschritten. Durch Proton-Proton-Kollisionen bei Schwerpunktsenergien von bis zu 8 TeV ist es erstmals gelungen, die Wechselwirkungen der kleinsten Bausteine der Materie im TeV-Energiebereich zu untersuchen. Höhepunkt der bisherigen Messungen stellt die Entdeckung des Higgs-Teilchens dar, die im Juli 2012 von den beiden großen Experimenten ATLAS und CMS bekannt gegeben wurde. Darüber hinaus wurden zahlreiche wichtige Messungen zum Test der Theorie der Elementarteilchen (Quantenfeldtheorien der starken und elektroschwachen Wechselwirkung) durchgeführt. Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt stellte die Suche nach Erweiterungen des Standardmodells der Theorie dar, das einige wichtige Fragen offen lässt, wie z.B. die Einbindung der Gravitation oder die Existenz neuer Formen von Materie. Solche Materieformen könnten z.B. für die sogenannte Dunkle Materie im Weltraum verantwortlich sein, auf die experimentelle Messungen der Astrophysik hinweisen. Das Graduiertenkolleg „Physik an Hadronbeschleunigern“ hatte an der Untersuchung dieser Fragestellungen und insbesondere auch an der Entdeckung des Higgs-Teilchens maßgeblichen Anteil. In der ersten Phase war es darauf ausgerichtet, die Physik am LHC optimal vorzubereiten. Wesentlich hierfür war eine enge Zusammenarbeit von Wissenschaftlern und Doktoranden verschiedener Experimente sowie zwischen Theoretikern und Experimentalphysikern. In der ersten Phase des Graduiertenkollegs wurden Tests der Theorie mit Hilfe von komplementären Messungen in verschiedenen Experimenten durchgeführt und interpretiert. Untersucht wurden die Elektron-Proton-Streuung im Experiment ZEUS am DESY in Hamburg, die tiefinelastische Myon-Nukleon-Streuung im COMPASS-Experiment am CERN, sowie Proton-Antiproton-Reaktionen im DØ-Experiment am US-Forschungslabor Fermilab. Im ZEUS-Experiment wurden wichtige Untersuchungen zur Struktur des Protons durchgeführt, die für die theoretische Berechnung von Reaktionsraten am LHC sehr relevant sind. Darüber hinaus wurden während der gesamten Laufzeit des Graduiertenkollegs im COMPASS-Experiment neuartige Untersuchungen zur Polarisation der Gluonen und zur Bestimmung des Beitrags der Quark-Spins zum Spin eines longitudinal polarisierten Protons durchgeführt. Desweiteren wurden erste Messungen zur Verteilung der Quark-Spins im transversal polarisierten Proton ausgeführt. Eine wichtige Komponente zur Vorbereitung der Physik am LHC stellte die Beteiligung am DØ-Experiment dar. Dort wurden bedeutende Beiträge zum Test des Standardmodells, zur Suche nach neuen Teilchen und zur Suche nach dem Higgs-Boson geleistet. Noch vor Inbetriebnahme des LHCs gelang es, die Existenz des Higgs-Teilchens im Massenbereich von 149 GeV bis 182 GeV auszuschließen. Darüber hinaus konnten wichtige Parameterbereiche von supersymmetrischen Modellen ausgeschlossen werden. In den vergangenen Jahren waren Doktoranden unseres Graduiertenkollegs an vielen Schlüsselanalysen der LHC Daten im ATLAS-Experiment beteiligt. So wurden neben Beiträgen zur Entdeckung des Higgs-Teilchens im Zerfallskanal H → W W (∗) → ℓνℓν , wichtige und teilweise federführende Beiträge zum Nachweis der Kopplung des Higgs-Teilchens an Fermionen über die Untersuchung der Zerfallskanäle H → τ τ und H → bb¯ sowie zur Bestimmung seiner Spin-Paritätseigenschaften geleistet. Auch zur Suche nach sub persymmetrischen Teilchen, insbesondere der Partnerteilchen der Quarks und Gluonen, wurde signifikant beigetragen. So konnte im ATLAS-Experiment die Existenz solcher Partnerteilchen mit Massen kleiner als etwa 1000 GeV ausgeschlossen werden. Auf theoretischer Seite wurden im Rahmen des Graduiertenkollegs wichtige Berechnungen von Quantenkorrekturen der starken und elektroschwachen Wechselwirkungen zu Teilchenprozessen am LHC durchgeführt, beispielsweise zu Signal- und Untergrundprozessen für die Higgs-Produktion sowie zur Präzisionsphysik mit elektroschwachen Eichbosonen. Desweiteren wurde zur Entwicklung neuer Methoden in der perturbativen Quantenfeldtheorie beigetragen, die sehr präzise Vorhersagen von Vielteilchenprozessen ermöglichten. Ferner wurden Modelle für Physik jenseits des Standardmodells entwickelt, die z.B. alternative Mechanismen zur Brechung der elektroschwachen Symmetrie vorschlagen.
