Comparative Study of Carbon in Natural and Synthetic Titanates
Subject Area
Synthesis and Properties of Functional Materials
Term
since 2021
Project identifier

In the planned project, comparative investigations will be carried out on synthetically produced carbon-modified titanium dioxide samples and naturally formed titanium-containing phases associated with carbon. In detail, it will be investigated whether the unusual characteristics in Raman spectra already observed on synthetic samples are also observable on natural carbon and titanium containing samples. In each case, the carbon species is of particular interest, with special attention to the comparability of synthetic and natural samples, including mineral parageneses. Our novel approach is to indirectly use the extreme conditions under which the selected meteorites and metamorphic rocks were formed to explain the observed structural properties of the synthetic titanium dioxide samples.
