Access panels (AP) consist of persons who deliberately participate in surveys. The advantages of sampling from an AP are – among others – a simpler sampling of subpopulations for surveys on special topics, faster fieldwork with the opportunity to implement web surveys, and – compared to traditional surveys – a lower nonresponse rate. However, there is an important drawback: the percentage of persons who can be recruited for an AP is as low as about 10–15 percent. This raises the question whether results on the basis of an AP are representative at all and how a methodological sound way of data exploitation looks like. This project wants to answer this question by using the example of the “Dauerstichprobe” (DSP), an AP from German Official Statistics recruited from the German Microcensus (MC). Our approach uses a sequential sampling scheme, with selection probabilities on the different stages that have to be estimated. The validation of the results will be done by means of a simulation study. The project will study the impact of different recruiting strategies and interview modes on the participation propensities. Besides cross-sectional use of the AP data, we will also investigate longitudinal issues Special emphasis will be given to differences and similarities of the DSP to the academic, telephone - based AP of the PPSM 1292.
