The concept of integrated operation of different energy sectors such as electric, heating/cooling, gas and transportation has attracted significant attention in the energy scientific community in the last years. The special interests lies in integration of heating and electric systems since they represent the largest portion of overall energy consumption. This project is dealing with definition of the optimal operation of the integrated electric and low temperature district heating and cooling (LTDHC) systems. In addition to the traditional dispatching formulations, the projects aims at analyzing and optimizing electric and LTDHC grid operation, which are often neglected in the literature. To accomplish the goals, the project will develop a comprehensive modeling approach suitable for near real-time calculations based on Modelica modeling language. Starting from the system model, an optimal operating point of the integrated system is determined by solving an optimization problem in near real-time and adjusting set points of the available controllers. A control software named “Integrated Optimal Operation Software - iO2S” will be developed during the project. The software and the optimization approach will be validated in the laboratory environment with Power Hardware-In-The-Loop (PHIL) experiments. The experiments will be conducted in the multi-domain microgrid laboratory at TUM Center for Combined Smart Energy System (CoSES). Finally, the project aims to answer the question on economic feasibility of such control systems and potential savings accomplished by their real-life implementation.
