Project Details
Magneto-rheopectic Boron-organo-siliconoxide (MrBos)
Applicant
Professor Gareth Monkman, Ph.D.
Subject Area
Synthesis and Properties of Functional Materials
Term
from 2020 to 2023
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 450619721
This project concerns research based on preliminary results from the DFG funded project "Untersuchung der elektrischen Eigenschaften von magnetoaktiven Polymeren" in the DFG-Schwerpunktprogramm "Feldgesteuerte Partikel-Matrix-Wechselwirkungen: Erzeugung, skalenübergreifende Modellierung und Anwendung magnetischer Hybridmaterialien".Magnetorheological fluids are thixotropic (shear thinning) and magnetoactive polymers magnetoeleastic. However, Boron-organo-silicon oxide polymers are rheopectic (shear thickening) and have visco-elastic-plastic characteristics. Their mechanical and electrical properties open up a completely new and hitherto neglected area of research. The effects are time dependent but repeatable. Potential applications include magnetically controlled frequency dependent devices, magnetic sensor systems, weighting elements for neural networks, etc.
