The consumption of a Western diet is sensed by the immune system and triggers the development of metabolic diseases. To understand environmental factors that regulate Western diet-induced metaflammation and disease manifestation, we performed an unbiased systems analysis, which revealed a range of putative protective and detrimental factors. We will address how these newly identified factors influence immune signalling cascades, metaflammation and innate immune memory function, or impact systemic metaflammation and innate immune programming in murine models of metaflammation. In a cohort of obese patients with or without cardiovascular disease and in participants of the Rhineland Study we will assess their influence on human pathologies.
