Model reduction of single particle models for coupled DEM/CFD simulations (Mönnigmann) develops methods that allow for the prediction of particle behaviour with the same resolution but at a much smaller computational cost than the single particle simulations used today. In FP2, the project proceeds from drying and calcination to particle pyrolysis and char conversion. This entails both more complex dynamics and time-varying particle geometries (e.g., shrinking). The team will extend the model reduction to the fluid phase in order to derive spatially resolved Nusselt and Sherwood numbers, which allow for an efficient description of the heat and mass transfer between a particle and the surrounding fluid. The reduced models will be based on simulation data and validated with experimental data.
