Flow mixing, heat transfer and chemical reaction in packed and moving bed reactors (C02)

Subject Area Technical Thermodynamics
Mechanical Process Engineering
Term since 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 422037413

In the project “Flow mixing, heat transfer and chemical reaction in packed and moving bed reactors” (Beyrau/van Wachem) a large-scale shaft kiln and a small-scale 3D-printed packed bed are used. In FP2, the shaft kiln will be upgraded to investigate reactive flows using first particles at rest and methane as a fuel. The fiber optic temperature measurement system developed in FP1 and thermocouples will be used to provide temperature data within the bed. Species concentrations at the exit of the printed model packed bed will be determined by gas analysis and laser diagnostics. Use of the additional small-scale experiment will be further continued with a focus on heat transfer. The stereo-Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) setup will be extended to thermographic PIV, in which the gas temperature is measured simultaneously with the flow velocities. Furthermore, simulations relying on particle-resolved DNS and DEM/CFD will be compared to identify the errors in existing DEM/CFD approaches and to develop improved averaging procedures for the DEM/CFD framework.
