Control of deiodinase type 1 (DIO1) expression and its protective function in human hepatocytes (P17)

Subject Area Endocrinology, Diabetology, Metabolism
Term since 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 424957847

DIO1 affects systemic and local TH metabolism. Impaired TH signalling negatively impacts micro- and macronutrient metabolism contributing to metabolic-associated fatty liver disease, cirrhosis and eventually carcinogenesis. DIO1 expression is sex-specific and controlled by exogenous modifiers, in particular selenium and various drugs. We hypothesize that DIO1 expression can be controlled and supported via a better understanding and active interference with such modulating factors, thereby protecting expression and enhancing local DIO1 activity, T3 generation and TH action for preserving and supporting liver tissue and metabolic health.
