The department of Biology at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel entertains a central microscopy core facility that is supported by funds from Kiel university and from the twenty group leaders of the Department of Biology and serves the members of the Department of Biology. For this core microscopy facility, we apply for a laser scanning microscope to replace a thirteen-year-old instrument. The central microcopy facility ensures an optimized usage, instrument maintenance and support for users through personell that is permanently employed. The central microscopy staff includes a scientist and two technical staff who not only organize accessibility to the instruments but also ensure help in specialized applications.Eight of the twenty reserach groups of the Department of Biology coming from the Institute of General Microbiology, Botanical Institute and Zoological Institute, support this application. Their research areas range from cell biology to physiology, develeopmental biology, evolutionary ecology and functional morphology to genomic and molecular microbiology all of which require high resolution light microcopy. Their projects are manyfold and include visualization of autofluorecence of exoskeletons from arthropods to visualization, localization and interaction of microbes to subcellular localization and interaction of proteins in plants and animals. The research for which the CLSM, that is applied for in this proposal, is largely supported by grant money and the financing of the CLSM likewise depends on third-party funding.
